The concept is used in a wide variety of meanings, to encompass all human remnants with a maritime nature, whether on land, under water, in the coastal or intertidal areas. For example, the maritime landscape includes aspects of economies, transport and resources, but also cognitive landscapes, for example in the form of place names.
