Definition

A sea battle site is a an area under water, where a high concentration of shipwrecks and human remains are either anticipated on the basis of historical records, or proven on the basis of archaeological remains.

In addition to the cultural importance, recent sea battle sites - especially of the World Wars - often also classify as war graves, while the wrecks are still regarded as the property of the flag state in accordance to the UN Convention on the Law of the Seas.
