"The material remains of seafaring and other forms of maritime cultural heritage, which are situated under water".


Definition by the Unesco Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage (2001)

"Underwater cultural heritage are all traces of human existence having a cultural, historical or archaeological character which have been partially or totally under water,periodically or continuously, for at least 100 year".[1]


Definition by the Code of Good Practice for the Management of Underwater Cultural Heritage in the Baltic Sea Region (COPUCH, 2008)

"Underwater Cultural Heritage means all cultural, historical and/or archaeological traces of human existence which have been under water for at least 100 years, or which otherwise are regarded as historically significant or protected by heritage legislation".[2]
